Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release a complete and annotated version of the works of Tamil poet and freedom fighter Subramania Bharati in New Delhi.
23 volumes will be released in the compilation by the Alliance Company with details of the editions, explanations, documents, background information and philosophical presentation, among others.
“Subramania Bharati’s writings instilled patriotism in people, brought the essence of Indian culture and spiritual heritage of the country to masses in a language that the masses can relate to,” a PMO release said.
Introduction
- Subramania Bharati (1882–1921) was a revered Tamil poet, journalist, social reformer, and freedom fighter.
- Known as Mahakavi Bharathiyar, he was a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry and a symbol of resistance against British colonial rule.
Contributions to Literature
- Introduced modern themes and innovative styles to Tamil poetry, moving away from traditional forms.
- He wrote on themes such as patriotism, social justice, empowerment of women, equality, and love.
- Famous works include:
- “Achamillai Achamillai” (Fearless, Fearless)
- “Chinnanchiru Kiliye” (Tender Little Parrot)
- “Endru Thaniyum Intha Sudhandhira Dhaagam?” (When Will the Thirst for Freedom Be Quenched?)
Role in the Freedom Struggle
- Journalism: Edited revolutionary Tamil journals like India and Vijaya to spread the ideas of independence and nationalism.
- Advocated for Swadeshi movement, abolition of untouchability, and universal education.
- Arrested and exiled to Pondicherry, then under French rule, to avoid British persecution.
